Democrats Have Their Schlitz Beer Reckoning

Via DailyKos and by Phoebe Loosinhouse, who nails it.
The Schlitz Beer saga, the story of how America's once favorite beer altered its hallmark recipe disastrously while seeking short term profits at the expense of quality and reputation, has always seemed to me to be analogous to the modern Democratic Party of the last decades.
I have often wondered these past few years - when will the message and role of the Democratic Party become so watered down, so diluted, so unpalatable and unrecognizable from its former self that the public, even the most loyal customers, simply stops buying it?
I think we're there.
Don't blame the public, Democratic Party -  blame your own executives for short-sighted expediency, blame substituting inferior ingredients and blame changing your brewing process. In short, you have failed at every level.
The old Democratic brew was reliable and earthy. It stood for the people at the bottom of the economic pyramid supporting the entire structure. It stood for labor and civil rights and economic and social justice and the general welfare.
To work towards those goals, the Democratic Party was the driving force behind  two seminal visions and agendas that basically altered the fabric of modern American society, most would argue for the better: The New Deal and The Great Society. We have that vision to thank for providing the secure underpinnings against poverty and despair in old age that we currently possess, Social Security and Medicare, the so-called "safety net". Imagine our world today without those two great revolutionary entitlement programs. And yet some Democrats today are slathering at the bit to come to a "Grand Bargain" and to help Republicans to dismantle and erode our greatest achievements, both as a Party and as a nation.
Our goal as Democrats through these last 4 decades should have been to protect,  expand and enhance the platforms of the New Deal and The Great Society and to continue forward on a path for security for all Americans. The previous formula was never summarized or captured better than in the "Four Freedoms"  defined by FDR: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, Freedom from Want, Freedom from Fear.
Think about how short and understandable that message is. That was our original Schlitz recipe. That is what we have diluted and altered in the spirit of rudderless bi-partisanship and "centrism".
In the interest of solidarity and long term goals, Liberals have been required by Democratic leadership for the last 4 decades to suspend their own passions and desires and sublimate them for the good of the Party. But this 'neo-liberalism' as it turns out has not been good for either the Party or the country. And there has been no pay-off for the loyalty of the Liberals, quite the opposite; they have been forced to standby while the Party basically destroyed itself by becoming the "Almost Republican But Nicer" Party.
The Democrats now have to figure out how to salvage the smoldering ruin of a political Party it is at the moment. I'm not even sure it is possible to, and I mean that seriously. No one wants to be affiliated with a Party that literally stands for nothing.
The only thing that might bring back this zombie, walking dead party is passion and progressivism. Only this time the real thing. The old recipe.

Elizabeth Warren Gets Seat At The Table…..Democrats Go Nuts

By now you have no doubt heard that   Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren has been given a seat in the Senate leadership, giving the Progressives a seat at the policy table. This is a good thing, but one would not think so based on the cry’s of some Democrats who were not in on the selection.  You know what? The hell with them. Senator Warren is the best thing to happen to Progressives in a long time, and hopefully she will not sell out to the Democratic Party leaders.
The New York Times David Firestone wasn’t to sure about Warren’s new role and had this to say:
A mere liaison is not what the Democrats need right now. The right wing is already talking about entitlement cutbacks, givebacks in corporate taxes, and undoing financial regulations. If Ms. Warren is allowed to become the voice of Democratic opposition to the worst Republican policies, she may just help lead the party out of the wilderness.
Ms. Warren, in an interview with The Huffington Post after this post was published, said she had no intention of being a mere liaison, and plans to help the Democrats make policy decisions on issues like college affordability, minimum wage and Social Security.
So, hopefully Ms. Warren will steer Harry Reid and the rest of his merry clan towards some real help with the working poor and the middle class, as well as the ongoing garbage over health care.
We have a Progressive now in a position to do something other than to cower to the Republicans and their masters. Ms. Warren has been talking the talk, now let us see if she can walk the walk.
   Also note from DailyKos:

More proof they're learning—Sen. Harry Reid strongly supported Warren for this role precisely because of what happened in the election.
"If the ballot measure results are any indication, actual progressive policies remain popular with voters in red and blue states. I believe you’ll see a Senate Democratic caucus fight on behalf of those policies and provide the votes if and when Republicans are ready to act," Faiz Shakir, a senior adviser to Reid, told HuffPost earlier this month.
There's no one better at shaping the progressive populist message in Congress than Warren, and Congress needs it for 2016. The Democrats as a whole need it for 2016. And here is where Warren can have a real effect on the 2016 presidential campaign. Hillary Clinton is not going to run a campaign that's discordant with what the Senate Democrats—with Warren shaping the policy and the message—are running on.

Election Day Should Be A National Holiday

Yes, he is an Independent, But Senator Bernie Sanders has Progressive blood in him, so go and sign the following petition.
Make Election Day A National Holiday

The House Of Progressive

Welcome to this new blog. I am currently in the process of making this blog look and feel the way that I would like it to be, so please excuse the mess.
I will be focusing on the replacement of the Democratic Party leadership with true Progressives that will stand for Progressive/Liberal ideas and policy.
I will also post content from other Progressive sites, and even Democratic Party sites when their stands on ideas and issues are wrong.
I will make every effort to try and not throw in any Republican garbage unless I feel that a good laugh is in order.
For you Tea-baggers/Republican trolls who might comment with the crap that you are so good at, please feel free to do so with the warning that you will be highly insulted, chopped up and ground and tossed back into the bucket of stupid in which you dwell.
